January 21, 2022 My very fussy old girl only wants to eat these pellets now! She chooses it over her Hill's wet food (stew), whereas before she would refuse to eat pellets. Well she still is quite picky but this food seems to do the trick with her! She really enjoys it!! What I personally love about the pellets, other than the ingredients, is the size of the pellets. They're so teeny tiny and cute, especially for my fussy kid who is sooo selective when it comes to pellet size! I'm also quite pleased that the food contains colostrum which is so important for their joints and immune system!!? What is the difference between grain-free and gluten-free dog food?
Gluten-free means the food contains no gluten-forming proteins – so no wheat, gluten containing barley, or rye. All MERA PURE Sensitive recipes are gluten-free. Grain-free goes further – it eliminates all grains entirely, including rice and corn, which are naturally gluten-free but still grains. If your dog reacts to grains broadly rather than just wheat or gluten specifically, the grain-free range is the appropriate choice.
Is grain-free dog food available in South Africa?
Yes. MERA PURE Sensitive Grain-Free dog food is available in South Africa through meradog.co.za and selected stockists. Both the Turkey & Potato and Herring & Potato recipes are formulated for adult dogs with grain sensitivities or allergies.
Is herring a good protein for dogs with itchy skin?
Yes. Herring is one of the richest dietary sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, which play a direct role in maintaining healthy skin and a strong coat. For dogs whose food allergy or sensitivity manifests primarily as a skin condition, a fish-based limited ingredient diet – like PURE Sensitive Herring & Potato – is frequently recommended by veterinarians as a first-line dietary intervention.
Can I switch my dog from the rice-based range to the grain-free range?
Yes, but transition gradually over 7–10 days – mixing increasing proportions of the new food with the old. If your dog has been doing well on the Turkey & Rice range and shows no signs of grain sensitivity beyond wheat or gluten, a switch to grain-free may not be necessary. Consult your veterinarian if you are unsure which range is most appropriate.
