MERA PURE Sensitive | Grain-free Range
MERA PURE Sensitive Grain-Free Dog Food
For dogs with a specific aversion or sensitivity to grains, the MERA PURE Sensitive Grain-Free range removes all grains entirely – replacing them with potato, a naturally digestible, grain-free carbohydrate. Two carefully formulated recipes, each built around a single novel protein source and the same strict Limited Ingredient Diet philosophy that defines the entire PURE Sensitive range. No wheat. No rice. No corn. No soy. Nothing that triggers.
WHY TURKEY?
A novel protein most dogs haven’t been exposed to
Turkey is one of the most commonly recommended proteins for elimination diets because most dogs have no prior exposure to it – making it far less likely to trigger an existing allergic response compared to chicken or beef.
WHY HERRING?
Omega-3-rich protein for skin and coat health
Herring is one of the richest natural sources of Omega-3 fatty acids in dog nutrition, actively supporting skin barrier function and coat condition. It is also a genuinely novel protein – most dogs have no prior exposure to it, significantly reducing the risk of sensitisation.
WHY POTATO?
A genuinely grain-free carbohydrate source
Potato is not a grain substitute – it is a naturally grain-free carbohydrate that provides clean, steady energy without the compounds that trigger grain sensitivity. Easily digestible and gentle on the gut, it is the single carbohydrate source in both grain-free recipes, in line with our L.I.D. philosophy.
THE GRAIN-FREE RANGE
GRAIN-FREE | ADULT | SINGLE PROTEIN
PURE Sensitive Turkey & Potato
A lean, highly digestible protein paired with potato for dogs who need a grain-free diet without compromising on digestive gentleness. Ideal for dogs transitioning from a rice-based diet or those with a confirmed grain sensitivity.
GRAIN-FREE | ADULT | SINGLE PROTEIN
PURE Sensitive Herring & Potato
A grain-free recipe built around herring – a rich, natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids – for dogs whose grain sensitivity presents alongside itchy skin, dull coat, or skin allergies. Herring is a genuinely novel protein that most dogs have never been exposed to.
GRAIN-FREE | TREATS | SINGLE PROTEIN
PURE Sensitive Turkey & Potato Goody Snacks
MERA PURE Turkey & Potato Goody Snacks are a grain-free, limited ingredient treat built around a single animal protein and a single carbohydrate source, so rewarding your dog never means undoing their diet.
The grain-free range is currently formulated for adult dogs. If you have a puppy or young dog with a grain sensitivity, the PURE Sensitive Turkey & Rice Puppy is our recommended starting point – wheat and gluten-free, and built on the same Limited Ingredient Diet philosophy.

September 27, 2026 I have a wired hair terrier and I first thought the pellets are going to be too big for her, but they are a good size and she is loving the herring!!
Still just in the process of slowly phasing out the old food still but glad I made the switch.

August 4, 2026 One of my dogs suffers from severe allergies and reacts to almost everything, but this food is an absolute game-changer. Both of my dogs took to it with the very first bowl, and it contains none of his triggers. It is a massive relief to find a clean, safe kibble that keeps his allergy flare-ups at bay.

August 13, 2024 My cats have been on Mera Classic for years so when I got my chow x puppy, Siya, I worked with the team to try this as chow-chows are often allergic to chicken and get hot-spots etc as a result.
Siya is THRIVING on this food - she has grown, the quality of her fur is SO much better and the hot spot areas have started to regrow hair. She is so full of life and loves adventuring with me.MERA PURE Sensitive Junior Turkey & Rice Dog Food

November 23, 2023 My puppy loves this food. And yes, pups eat anything, but not only does the puppy love it, but my older dog also tries to eat the pup's food (and that's unusual). And I also have to keep the cat from eating it. So it is well received and obviously really enjoyable. I also use the pellets for treats when going out. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S)
What is the difference between grain-free and gluten-free dog food?
Gluten-free means the food contains no gluten-forming proteins – so no wheat, gluten containing barley, or rye. All MERA PURE Sensitive recipes are gluten-free. Grain-free goes further – it eliminates all grains entirely, including rice and corn, which are naturally gluten-free but still grains. If your dog reacts to grains broadly rather than just wheat or gluten specifically, the grain-free range is the appropriate choice.
Is grain-free dog food available in South Africa?
Yes. MERA PURE Sensitive Grain-Free dog food is available in South Africa through meradog.co.za and selected stockists. Both the Turkey & Potato and Herring & Potato recipes are formulated for adult dogs with grain sensitivities or allergies.
Is herring a good protein for dogs with itchy skin?
Yes. Herring is one of the richest dietary sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, which play a direct role in maintaining healthy skin and a strong coat. For dogs whose food allergy or sensitivity manifests primarily as a skin condition, a fish-based limited ingredient diet – like PURE Sensitive Herring & Potato – is frequently recommended by veterinarians as a first-line dietary intervention.
Can I switch my dog from the rice-based range to the grain-free range?
Yes, but transition gradually over 7–10 days – mixing increasing proportions of the new food with the old. If your dog has been doing well on the Turkey & Rice range and shows no signs of grain sensitivity beyond wheat or gluten, a switch to grain-free may not be necessary. Consult your veterinarian if you are unsure which range is most appropriate.
